A landscape architecture studio with 35+ years of work in 16 countries - Four Seasons Bora Bora, Hotel Del Coronado, Msheireb Downtown Doha, The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park - wanted a portfolio site as quiet and considered as the work itself. We built a custom WordPress theme around a fullscreen hero slideshow, a signature circular line motif, and photography-first project pages.
The brief
Founded by William Burton in 1989, the studio has crafted notable public-realm and hospitality landscapes across four continents. Their existing portfolio site under-sold the work - too much chrome, not enough room for the photography to breathe.
The brief was to strip everything back: a near-empty canvas, almost no body copy on the homepage, and a way of moving through projects that felt like flipping through a monograph.
Design approach
The homepage is a fullscreen hero slideshow: each slide advances to the next featured project, with the title fading in over a single beautifully shot image. A signature visual motif - thin overlapping circles that move with scroll - runs through the entire site as a brand-level identity device.
Project detail pages stay quiet: client, collaborators, recognition, one descriptive paragraph, and then a "More Projects" infinite-scroll marquee at the bottom.
